ThinkWorks Enrichment Programs


ThinkWorks enrichment programs provide after-school classes for TK-5th grade students and include sports, chess, language arts, sewing, and more!
 
Registration for the second session of ThinkWorks opens December 3rd at 12pm and closes December 17th at 5pm. Classes begin in January and continue into May. Classes will fill up quickly, so please be sure to register right away.
 
A portion of each registration fee comes back to Alamo School Ed Fund.

Mandarin Class (Kinder ONLY) ~ 2:30-3:30pm

Instructor: Spanish Academy
 
This is a Hands-on and interactive, Friendly Mandarin Immersion ("FMI") program designed specifically for Kindergartners. The younger the children and when gaining exposure to a new language the easier it is for them to learn to retain it. Curriculum consists of: Language time (vocabulary words), exercise time (command words like jump, skip, walk, run, etc.) visuals (flashcards, puzzle pieces, toys, books and more), music (singing), art projects, games and much more. The goal of this program is to introduce the Mandarin language and be the first building block for the grades ahead. New material is introduced each session. This is an absolutely engaging and fun program for kindergartners! Kindergartners love it and learn much more.

Basketball & Flag Football (Grades 1-3) ~ 2:30-3:30pm

Instructor: Play for a Stray - in partnership with Skyhawks Sports 
 
The first half of the classes will be Basketball focused (since the grass will be closed) and then the second half of the classes will be all Flag Football focused. Whether looking for a safe introduction to Basketball and Football, or an offseason program to prepare your child for competitive play, Skyhawks is the perfect program to help your young athlete take the next step in both sports. Participants will build confidence and learn individual skill development through innovative drills and age-appropriate games. Skyhawks coaches provide a positive environment where players of all abilities can participate in friendly competition with lots of encouragement and a big focus on fun! Bring your friends or come make new ones!

CineCraft Kids: Lights, Camera, Imagination! (Grades 1-5) ~ 2:30-3:30pm

Young filmmakers will jump into the thrilling world of moviemaking by exploring different genres and learning how to craft compelling stories. They will hone their skills by becoming scriptwriters and creating storyboards and shot lists. The young filmmakers will even have a chance to practice voice recording to make their stories even more exciting. They will use their creativity to bring these tales to life by using drawings and other crafts. By the end, they'll have the chance to create an amazing short film with their peers, from start to finish!

Mathnasium (Grades 1-5) ~ 2:30 - 3:30pm

At Mathnasium, we build strong math foundations to help children succeed in school and life. Our math-only program is tailored to each student, starting with a detailed assessment to identify learning gaps and strengths, followed by a tailored curriculum delivered in an engaging and 1:1 teaching setting. 
 
Program Highlights:
- Assessment of skills: First session includes a written assessment and math activity. Results are emailed to parents. If the student is significantly behind, we recommend an additional session per week at our center at Alamo Plaza
- Personalized Learning Plan: Customized based on assessment results and delivered with guidance from our trained instructors in a small student-to-instructor ratio
- Session Structure: 50 mins of Mathnasium curriculum, followed by 10 mins of fun math activities, spin-the-wheel rewards, and prize redemption
- Integrated Rewards Program: Students earn stars and redeem them for prizes, keeping learning fun and motivating
- Progress Tracking: Families receive a pre-assessment report, ongoing progress report, and a post-assessment report to showcase growth
- Final session: Concludes with a review of all skills learned—true masters win a special treasure!

My First Hot Cocoa Stand (Grades TK-2) ~ 12:50 - 1:50pm

Learn how to make yummy hot cocoa, and earn money selling it! A hot cocoa stand is a great way to introduce our youngest entrepreneurs to the world of business and is fun! From designing marketing flyers to estimating profits to experimenting with recipes, students have fun while developing business savvy! As a showcase event, students launch their stand as a fundraiser for a charity they select!

It’s time to compete! This program will focus on both skill development and game play. COACH YOSHI is taking this program over for Winter and Spring and will focus on enhancing their individual skills and advancing their skills within games! Kinder students will work on different Sewing projects than the upper grades. Students will use age appropriate needles, will use a hoop to help them with their sewing, will learn how to sew on different materials (paper plates, cotton and other).

Gardening changes and improves children's lives! There are many benefits from gardening for children:
 
1. Learn more about our earth and the environment
2. Relaxing and engaging
3. Builds a sense of confidence
4. And more!
 
In this class students will learn about: how plants grow, soil and it's importance to plants, how to water plants, different species of plants, and will plant legumes, flowers and other types of seeds. NOTE: students will plant seeds in small pots and take them home every other class. Students will make a gardening book of what they learned in class.

Our classes are designed to engage beginning to intermediate coders. Instead of your typical coding puzzles, students learn by creating mini-games. They’ll master key concepts — such as sequencing, variables, conditionals, and events — all while enjoying the process of building games for themselves and their friends. We provide laptops loaded with our distraction-free version of Scratch.

Mom, I want to learn how to sew!” Sewing is not only fun and creative; but, it is a useful learning skill.
 
Children will learn how to safely thread a needle; use patterns; and sew their own pieces by hand. Students will make project that are either decorative or useful, such as: potpourri bag, glasses/phone case, ornaments and more.

Participants will learn, play and compete in fun Skyhawks variations of everyone’s favorite games such as Banana Tag, Danger Ball, Kickball, Dodgeball, Quidditch, Capture the Flag, etc. This is not our average skill development camp, but rather a camp for kids to come out after school and get some of their energy out while playing their favorite team games! By adding just the right amount of friendly competition, this program teaches boys and girls teamwork, sportsmanship, leadership, and strategy. Your child will leave this camp with new skills, new friends, and a new love for sports!
